My favorite books
Chained Eagle by Everett Alvarez
Alvarez was held POW by the North Vietnamese for 8 and 1/2 years. He was the first American pilot to be shot down on at the Bay of Tonkin incident. This book is a fantastic look at the character of a Bay Area Chicano. He was born and raised in the San Jose area.

A Patriot After All by Juan Ramirez
The best Chicano in Vietnam book I've ever read. Another local Chicano chronicles his life which is an epic. Ramirez writes with a profound retrospective that deals w/ the nuances of growing up poor, Mexican and somewhat aimless. The way he confronts his life before and after his time in the military is poignant, sweet and bitter. He really wrestles w/ his past, some of it spent addicted to drugs and alcohol, and worse utterly negative and lost.

Lines and Shadows by Joseph Wambaugh
A fascinating look at the world of modern day border crossers. What do illegal aliens encounter when they come up North. this book follows the efforts of San Diego Police men who tried to fight crime along the border. they discovered the harsh reality and absorbed much of the toxic effects. The most tragic aspect of this book is that it is true and continues as much today as when it was written, 20 years ago.
